To the south of Adelaide is the Fleurieu peninsular and the wine growing district of McLaren Vale. Like most areas in SA, the summers are hot. However, what makes McLaren Vale unique is its proximity to the sea, giving it cool relief and the ideal Mediterranean climate for red wine production. While being well known for growing varieties like Shiraz, Cabernet and Grenache, the McLaren Vale and neighbouring areas like Langhorne creek are popular for their red blends. The variety in soil types and growing conditions allow the local winemakers to produce some wines with unique flavours and complexity.
