A relative late bloomer, the Orange wine industry developed in the early 1980's and now has over 1500 hectares of grapes being grown on some 80 vineyards with numerous cellar doors. With Mt Canobolas as its hub, the Orange wine region is located in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales and is well established as a food and wine destination.

The grapes are grown at over 600m above sea level, a true inland, cool climate grape growing area that produces wines of distinct flavour, texture and varietal character.

Originally focussed on traditional varieties such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Riesling. More recently, winemakers in this region have introduced varieties like Tempranillo, Viognier and Sangiovese.
